Best of the week: Comics bought 13 January

First things first. This was originally going to be the first of a couple of posts tonight, but I moved my profile to the "new" Blogger. It looks like a couple of very minor upgrades, but I'm not about to go playing with it tonight. I'm kinda annoyed, though - it was supposed to take a couple of minutes, but instead took over an hour.

As for the week in comics, it was quite a bit smaller than last week, but the majority of it was damn good.

After the relatively disappointing last issue, it was great to see Green Arrow back in brilliant form. This issue continues the storyline guest starring Batman, with the Red Hood making a play for Star City's underworld.

I was strongly opposed to Jason Todd's return, and the revelation of his identity as the Red Hood sickened me. He's a character that, for my money, should have stayed dead. But Judd Winick did the impossible - he made him a character that I care about, a great re-addition to the Bat-mythos. And now he's brought him in for an arc in Green Arrow (incidentally, Winick's also currently writing him in Outsiders).

So, Winick's writing a character he made his own, and has also injected the issue with a great sense of humour and fun that was largely missing from the previous issue. The interplay between the Red Hood and Brick is great, as is Winick's use of Speedy. Add a nice scene where Green Arrow tries to offer support to Batman, and it's another great issue of the series.

Geoff Johns made his intentions for his Justice Society of America relaunch clear throughout his promotional interviews: Make it the best comic on the shelves. And with the first two issues, he's giving it a damn good shot.

The issue continues from where the last one kicked off - someone is murdering the Golden Age heroes, and the team needs to find out who, before more blood is spilled. We get some great development and humour in the form of the new Starman, as well as hints to a parallel universe... the one presented in Kingdom Come ten years ago.

Great story, with amazing art. This is the new title to watch in the months to come.

Runaways #23

Brian K Vaughan's penultimate issue of Runaways is a heart breaker. Still reeling from the death of Gert, Chase has reached a decision - he must sacrifice his life to bring back his lost love.

As the Runaways come to understand his plans, it's a race against the clock to ensure that he doesn't end his life. Brian K Vaughan handles these characters amazingly. The reader can't help but feel for them, as each character is beautifully handled.

This issue is - yet again - nothing short of amazing. Brian K Vaughan has crafted one of the best comics on the shelves, and the pay off is here.

Strange Girl #13

Strange Girl has been suffering from a bit of a lull of late, and I've found myself wondering whether I want to continue reading the title. It had just been feeling like it had lost it's way somewhat.

This issue, however, has restored my faith in writer Rick Remender, and the title in general. Bethany's travelled to Hell, and is being tormented with visions of her past, and what may have been, had the Rapture never occured.

This issue is beautifully realised psychological horror, and still maintains the twists, turns, and above all else, the humour that has made this title so great. Micah Farritor's art is also beautiful, and hopefully we'll see far more from him.

Gail Simone has taken her gift for humour, and really upped the ante. Set in a retirement town for former superheroes and villains, Welcome to Tranquility is a fresh take on the world of superheroics.

It's not all fun and games, however, as a former hero has been murdered, and the town sheriff has to identify the murderer. The characterisation is great - you feel for the hero's former comrades, and understand their emotion; as well as the aforementioned humour, which is hilarious.

The takes on Golden and Silver Age comics, as well as forms of advertising throughout the town of Tranquility give this comic a feel that is unlike anything else on the shelves. Great stuff.

What I missed last week, but got this week:

Only one comic, and that's Strange Girl #13. I won't go any further into it, since it's reviewed above, but I'll just mention - again - that it's a great read.

Fallen Angel, Volume 2: Down to Earth trade paperback

Much as I am a fan of the IDW issues of Fallen Angel, I thought the first trade paperback collecting DC's run of the series left a bit to be desired. It was almost like the book was "trying" to be mature, but was hampered along the way.

The second trade paperback, Down to Earth, however, is more polished, and resembles the current issues a lot more. This trade paperback focuses predominantly on the Fallen Angel's relationship and bitter rivalry with the Black Mariah, and it's not pretty. We're also treated to a standalone issue looking at her relationship with the Magistrate of Bete Noir.

A great read, which is far more solid than the first trade. This is where the series really began to excel.

I read a couple of issues of Fray when it was originally released, but due to unforseen circumstances at the time, I never completed the collection. And this trade paperback has been out for a long time, yet I've only just gotten around to picking it up.

And man, is it great! Joss Whedon once again proves his brilliance, this time taking his Buffy concept and flinging it hundreds of years in the future, with the new slayer, Melaka Fray.

It's a great read - action, humour, and the characters that make Whedon shine. A brilliant read.

I read the original:

Ghost Rider, Volume 1: Vicious Cycle collects the first arc in the excellent run written by Daniel Way. Fast, furious, and oddly funny, it's an excellent read.

Other bits and pieces:

Batman was the week's lone disappointment, but still the best issue of Ostrander and Mandrake's fill ins
52 was an excellent read, featuring an important death - just not as great as the last few issues
Outsiders was a good read, flashing back to the lost year
Angel: Auld Lang Syne was very amusing

Four Hellboy Essential Collection cards!

What promises to be one of about four Hellboy cards, this has a couple of very funky abilities.

The first of these is simple enough - up Hellboy's attack and defence whenever he stuns a character. This shouldn't be difficult - stats-wise, he's slightly above average. Naturally, this only works if he's your only visible character, indicating that the BPRD affiliation likes to play with your hidden and visible areas, a la Hellfire Club from the X-Men expansion.

The second ability is awesome, as well. You can pay 1 endurance to return a character to your hand. This is great to avoid KOing said character when they become stunned, and works nicely with Hellboy's counter gaining. If you control another visible character, launch them into an attack which will stun them back, return it to your hand, and then attack with Hellboy , and get the counter.

Break off the Horns

I'm yet to see the remaining versions of Hellboy, but if the one above is any indication, this card is very sweet indeed.

If you look above at Hellboy, Anung Un Rama, and see the second paragraph, where I mention a combo, think about how this card will work with him.

Launch in for an attack which will get your character stunned, attack with Hellboy, gain a counter, attack again, gain another counter.

As a card, it's fairly simplistic, but it has the potential to be dangerous. Which is always fun! Not only does it help you wipe out your opponent's board, it also helps with beefing up Hellboy.

Grigori Rasputin, True Father

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the BPD's enemies the Thule Society, headed up by Hellboy's arch-nemesis, Grigori Rasputin.

His stats are about average for a 4-drop, and he doesn't have flight or range. Instead, he has a really awesome ability - pay a certain amount of endurance, and KO a character with that cost.

It looks as though KOing characters is going to be the Thule Society's modus operandi, and this will help things move along nicely.

Grigori Rasputin, True Father has some great potential within the Thule Society deck, as well as within other decks.

Accept Your Destiny

The fourth and final card tonight, again, is awesome.

It lets you not only exhaust a character to KO a stunned character, but also to gain endurance equal to the cost. There's one downside, however, and that's that you need to have a Thule Society character to exhaust, limiting it's use in other decks.

As with Gregori Rasputin, True Father, it encourages you to KP your opponents' characters. It will also work nicely with said card, as you can stun a couple of characters, pay Gregori's endurance to KO one of them, exhaust another character you control to KO another character, and gain some endurance back. If you work it properly, you're basically KOing to characters for the cost of exhausting just one of them.

It was a bigger shipment than last week, in part to it kinda being a shipment and a half, due to comic shortages around the place (the US West Coast, and Australia - probably other countries too). If it weren't for this, it would have been quite small.

This week was quite the mixed bag. Same great stuff, some good stuff, some adequate stuff, and some crap.

Wow. This is the third utterly amazing issue of 52 in a row. It's always a solid read, but once again, the creators have gone above and beyond with a spectacular issue.

This issue kicks off exactly one second after the previous issue, where Lex Luthor ushered in the new year with the push of a button. While it's been known that over the period of 52, Luthor would be responsible for a crime that would royally piss off the world, and the logical guess was that it would revolve around his Everyman Project - giving people super powers - the fallout presented in this issue was amazing. Hundreds of people losing their powers, resulting in mass death and destruction - powerful stuff.

Following throughout the next few days presented in the issue, we see some of the repurcussions, as well as an interesting twist with Starfire, Animal Man, and Adam Strange's adventure in space. I wonder whether the next issue will keep up the brilliant momentum.

All Star Superman #6

On the complete opposite side of the coin from 52 - yet written by co-writer Grant Morrison - is a very small, personal story.

I'll ignore the fact that these issues always feature a "to be continued" tag, which makes this issue being a flashback with no indication apart from the story itself be a little confusing. Because, every issue in this series is standalone. And it's a great story.

Set prior to Clark officially becoming Superman, we're given a quasi-Superboy saving the day in Smallville. Some strange visitors show up at the farm, all leading up to Jonathan Kent having a heart attack. The mystery works, but the kicker of the issue is the emotion over his death. A touching, somber story.

X-23: Target X #2

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of X-23. She's one of the most interesting recent additions to comic books. And thankfully, this latest miniseries is highlighting it beautifully.

Locked up and being interrogated by Captain America, X-23 continues to tell him about her past, focusing on her trying to make a normal life for herself, and go to school. There are some humourous results, but the undercurrent is quite dark, with the final pages leaving the reader with a sense of forboding.

Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost continue to prove that they're capable of better than what they provide on New X-Men, and Michael Choi's art is nothing short of amazing. This is a great miniseries, and continues the fine tradition of X-23 in X-23 and NYX.

Sampling:

I grabbed the Dabel Brothers Free Sampler, which includes some previews of their comics. Thankfully it's free, because it doesn't pretend to be anything but advertising.

What I missed last week, but got this week:

I didn't realise that the reason for last week's smaller lot of comics was due to the delayed shipments to half of the US and (presumably) the rest of the world. The following is what I caught up on this week:

Batman #661 - John Ostrander is capable of writing far better comics than this. It really makes the filling in for Grant Morrison and Adam Kubert annoying.
The Boys #6 - A funny issue, including the disgusting use of a hampster! Not quite up to the level of most of the other issues, though.
Dabel Brothers Free Sampler - I mentioned it above, but figured I'd list it here, just to be thorough.
The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #7- Just as painful as always. I'm counting down til the day Bilson and DeMeo are no longer writing it.
Justice League of America #5 was a great continuation of the story.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #25 - A fun issue, and it looks like it's building to something bigger soon.
Superman/Batman #31 - Man, as this continues, I find it harder and harder to defend Mark Verheiden's writing.

What I missed this week, and will hopefully get this week:

Strange Girl #13 was the victim of more delays this week. Hopefully it'll be better than the last issue.

I read the originals:

Crisis Aftermath: The Battle for Bludhaven took a little while to get going, but when it did, it was pretty cool. Never brilliant, but the latter half was often enjoyable.
Ghost Rider: The Road to Damnation is an excellent read from the always great Garth Ennis, and featuring amazing art from Clayton Crain. Great action, funny humour, excellent characterisation, with the right amount of suspense. Excellent.
JSA Volume 12: Ghost Stories is proof that Paul Levitz should never write a comic, ever again. Adding insult to injury is that he took over from the great Geoff Johns for this arc, instead of simply finishing the series.
Outsiders: The Good Fight collects the first One Year Later arc, and is a good read. Judd Winick knows his stuff, and managed to keep the year long jump and new team interesting, while maintaining the spirit of the title.

Other bits and pieces:

Civil War was cool, but not great. It builds nicely to the final chapter, and had a couple of amusing punisher moments
Amazing Spider-Man was the weakest it's been in a long while, and the worst Civil War tie-in of the week
Nightwing wrapped up the arc nicely
Superman continued it's post apocalyptic tale well

Blue Beetle #10

Keith Giffen is a talented man. Not only does he supply the art breakdowns for 52 each week - and incidentally another of the week's best comics - he also co-writes Blue Beetle. Admittedly, the series has been incredibly slow, and I've thought about cancelling it, however in this issue, Giffen - along with co-writer John Rogers - has given a fun adventure displaying his gift for characterisation mixed with a deft touch of humour that made his old issues of Justice League Internatonal such classics.

This issue follows the disappearance of his close friend - and future love interest, no doubt - Brenda. A little research later, and he discovers that she was teleported to New Genesis, home of the New Gods. And wackiness ensues. No doubt about it, this issue is just plain fun.

Astonishing X-Men #19

The t-shirts which read "Joss Whedon is my master now" say it all, really. The creator of Buffy, Angel and Firefly has told some great stories in TV, film, and more recently comics. And the first issue of his final arc in Astonishing X-Men is no different.

While the second and third arcs didn't quite live up to his initial arc, it's apparent that it's all been building to his finale, Unstoppable. And what an amazing ride it is. Following the events of #18, the team has been taken into outerspace heading towards the Breakworld, a planet, it is prophesised, that will be destroyed by one of the team.

The issue is full of great characterisation. While there's minimal action, what is presented works. And John Cassaday's art just seems to keep getting better.

Huntress: Darknight Daughter

Darknight Daughter is an interesting beast. Reprinting stories from the 70's, originally published in issues of DC Super Stars, Batman Family, and Wonder Woman, it features the earliest appearances of the Huntress. Published before Crisis on Infinite Earths rewrote DC's history, the Huntress here is from Earth-2, and is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman.

The stories are quite simplistic, given the combination of the period they were written, their short length, and Paul Levitz's limited skills as a writer, but it's interesting to see how different both versions of the Huntress are.

And while modern comics cop a lot of crap for the "cheesecake" factor, the stories here really play this up to the level of virtual exploitation.

An interesting read, but not necessarily good.

Blue Beetle: Shellshocked collects the first six issues of the ongoing series. Fun, but slow. A nice build to the latter issues where it picks up.
Angel Spotlight collects a hit (mostly) and miss (occasionally) collection of tales based on Angel's supporting cast.

Connor Hawke: Dragon's Blood picks up the pace after the slow first issue
Detective Comics is an atmospheric issue focusing on the return of Scarface
Justice is lucky that Alex Ross's art is beautiful
Usagi Yojimbo is a fun read, with a nasty twist

Just a quick post before I get into the week's comics to point out that I passed the 400 mark. This is post #405. Yay.

It's 2007

"I'm not saying that this is the end of my heading out on New Years. Not at all. But it's definately the last time I head out for it, for the sake of it."

That's how I summarised the shenanigans - or lack thereof - for New Year's Eve last year (click here to read my bitching about it). It was a waste of time, period.

And twelve months later, I found myself still disenfranchised, and sat the night out. Did nothing. And it felt good.

Granted, the night was event free. But on the upside, the rain came pissing down - and it was well overdue - in a huge thunderstorm. We've had a bit of rain since Christmas, and its been good. But by opting out of New Year partying (or trying to party), I managed to keep dry.

The day wasn't entirely uneventful, though. I caught up with a friend over the afternoon, and we partook in a few beverages. Nice and relaxing, and good to catch up.

And that's all I really needed, after all the Christmas stuff, anyway. Who knows, I may opt out of doing anything next year, too.

Or maybe not...

But anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The most controversial movie of 2006

Happy Feet was finally released here yesterday, so I made my way out to the cinema for the first morning session, along with a few mates.

I'd read a few articles about the controversy surrounding this movie.

Don't be Mislead by "Crappy Feet"! calls the film "the darkest, most disturbing feature length animated film ever offered by a major studio", and continues, stating "the propagandistic theme suggests that the biggest menace for the lovable penguins is the human race". Furthermore, the writer accuses the film of having "a bizarre anti-religious bias", adding that the film also includes "a subtext that appears to plead for endorsement of gay identity".
Happy Feet ring controversy takes a slightly different look at the film, focusing on Hi-Cone, who create the ringed beverage holders complaining about the film. The article states "as the penguin's neck grows, the plastic constricts his windpipe, nearly strangling him in the process. Hi-Cone vice president and general manager Steve Henn says the movie producers "didn't do their homework," and calls the plot line misleading and irresponsible".
Christian Spotlight at the Movies has it's fair share of comments from cinemagoers decrying the movie. A select few of the comments include of one of the films' characters "swings from mystic to cheesy tele-evangelist to sexual opportunist"; describing the film itself as an "anti-Christian, pro-sexual immorality" that is "warping our young peoples minds with trash".

And many, many people are saying that the PG rating it received in the US was too relaxed. Well, guess what? Here it got a G rating. Which, after seeing the movie, did surprise me. Not because the movie is evil, or corruptive, but there is a little suggestive humour, and it does get a little dark in places, which could scare the little kids.

Prior to seeing this movie, I was surprised by the reception, wondering how an animated children's movie could cause such controversy. And after seeing it, I can see where it's coming from, at least.

Do I agree with this controversy?

Not at all.

What follows are my comments against the green quotes.

Uh huh. I'm wondering if this writer ever saw Watership Down. Or does that get a pass because it was made nearly thirty years ago, or because it was based on a book?

"The propagandistic theme suggests that the biggest menace for the lovable penguins is the human race".
I thought it was reasonably common knowledge that the human race is a menace - not just for the "lovable penguins", but for nature, the ecosystem, and the various species throughout the world. We pollute, we overfish, and yes, we are destroying the world around us. Is this something that should never be stated?

I love this one! Just because a character is different - in this case, the lead character, Mumble - they must be gay! One of the messages in the movie is that you should be accepting of those who are different, regardless of race, sexual identity, whatever. And it's obvious in the movie that Mumble is retarded, and even gives a reason for this. Oh, and he gets the girl, too, which is quite interesting for a movie all about "gay identity".

"As the penguin's neck grows, the plastic constricts his windpipe, nearly strangling him in the process. Hi-Cone vice president and general manager Steve Henn says the movie producers "didn't do their homework," and calls the plot line misleading and irresponsible".
I don't believe I saw the "Hi-Cone" logo anywhere in the movie. It wasn't saying that the product itself is evil, but people should be more responsible as to how they dispose of their waste.

"Swings from mystic to cheesy tele-evangelist to sexual opportunist".
You know, it's not entirely unheard of for tele-evangelists to become embroiled in scandals, revolving around *gasp!* sex. But was the character - named Lovelace - from the outset a tele-evangelist? No. He was proclaiming himself as a false idol, cashing in on circumstance. Yes, the audience was given a caricature, and yes, it was played for laughs, but that's where it ended.

"Anti-Christian, pro-sexual immorality".
Anti-Christian? The elder emperor penguins worshipped a god. They blamed Mumble's being different as a catalyst for the lack of fish, but I liken this to various ancient religions, and even a more Pagan sensibility of these characters, rather than Christian. Because a characters' religion is wrong isn't an indictment on Christianity, especially when the given religion bares no resemblance to Christianity whatsoever. As for "pro-sexuality", there is thinly veiled sexual imagery and humour in the movie. Is this wrong? I don't think so. It's definitely nothing that younger children will pick up on, and those old enough to understand it should be able to move on from it.

"Warping our young peoples minds with trash".
Let's look at my previous comments. It's about acceptance, which ergo, must be trash. Yes, it does have thinly veiled sexual imagery, but young people - and I'm assuming by that term, kids - won't get it. And I don't remember there being anything explicit whatsoever.

And what are my thoughts on the film itself?

The movie was surprising. It is a lot darker than any of the advertisements made it out to be, but it wasn't without it's fun times. The movie worked towards a balance between good times and bad; wackiness and passing on a message.

For the most part it succeeded, though I will conceed that the message at the end was a little heavy handed. The darker moments in the movie worked, and the contrast with the light really meant that when the characters were in danger, you felt it yourself.

The animation was fantastic, and was among the best ever committed to film (or recorded digitally, or whatever). The acting was supurb, and the music was great.

I don't agree with the controversy surrounding this movie, and it just goes to show that so many people are incredibly closed-minded, so much so, that they will look for anything to hate a movie that offers anything to think about. If anything, I don't think the themes will impact kids, who will be more taken with the dancing penguins, the music, the fun and the adventure.

The surfer shall rise

The teaser trailer for Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer has just hit online, courtesy of Apple Trailers. Sadly, it hasn't been YouTubed yet, so you'll just have to follow the link the old fashioned way.

I wasn't a big fan of the original Fantastic 4 movie. I thought it managed to capture the light heartedness of the comic, and managed to keep a sense of fun, but the plot was full of wholes, and in a nutshell, it wasn't great.

But this teaser... wow. It does something different - it simply shows a scene from the movie, and leaves you wanting more. The effects with the Surfer are nice, and the scene itself is fast and frenetic.

Everyone seems to be waiting for word of Galactus, and no, he doesn't show up in the teaser. Just his herald, the Silver Surfer. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if there's no Galactus in the movie, or if he just rocks up in the end, with cinema's current obsession with trilogies.

The teaser doesn't do anything to show that Rise of the Silver Surfer will be a better film than the original, but it does manage to build up the hype nicely. Far better than the footage for Spider-Man 3's managed to do thus far.

Wow. As 52 hits it's thirty third week, readers are treated to the Christmas issue. The schmaltz is happy contained to a montage, as well as a few references to the silly season, and aside from that, the issue is full of greatness.

We get to know Batwoman a bit more through her working with Nightwing to shut down Intergang's operations, as well as her alter ego Kate Kane, with her dealings with Montoya and the dying Question later in the issue. Add to this a great scene with Lex and his Infinity Inc, and a great "revelation" from Black Adam and his cohorts, this issue has a lot going on, and manages to do so with heart. Another great issue.

Civil War: War Crimes

I'm the first to admit that throughout Civil War and ir's multitude of tie-ins, Tony Stark has been portrayed as a dick. And I've heard a few comments from people that this issue finally cements him in the super-villain category. But, on that note, and as far as this issue is concerned, I have to disagree.

Granted, once again, Stark makes a deal with the devil. The proverbial devil being Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime. He's doing what he feels needs to be done.

But more importantly, this issue is a character study of Fisk - his motivations, and what drives him to assist the pro-Registration side of the war. Add in some great plot twists, and you have an excellent story, magnificently crafted by writer Frank Tieri. It's great stuff.

Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War

While I haven't been a huge fan of much of Civil War, it's interesting that two of this week's tie-ins are great comics.

It should be noted, however, that this issue is not by any means required reading for the core miniseries, and doesn't add anything to the ongoing plot. Instead, it's a look at two friends, two men who were the staunchest of allies.

It's an issue where Iron Man and Captain America meet. They talk. They both explain where they're coming from, and try to convert the other to their side. It's rare that both sides of the argument are treated equally, but this issue pulls it off nicely. For the first time, Iron Man's point of view is explained to the reader, and whether you agree or not, it makes sense. An excellent read, for fans of Civil War, or fans of the characters.

Secret Six #6

The sequel miniseries to Villains United, the greatest of the Infinite Crisis miniseries' by a long way, comes to a close. The Six have their final confrontation with Vandal Savage, in a battle that ends up being personal for more than just his daughter, Scandal.

Gail Simone weaves her brilliant sense of humour into the story, along with some excellent action, and brilliant characterisation. By the end of the issue, I was left wishing that the series was ongoing, and really cared for the Mad Hatter.

While much of this miniseries wasn't Simone's greatest work, the conclusion was a great pay off. Brad Walker and Jimmy Palmiotti's art wasn't the greatest out there, but Simone's writing more than compensated.

Teen Titans #42

Providing readers with a break between "Titans Around the World" and the upcoming, much hyped "Titans East", Geoff Johns has written a standalone story telling the origin of Kid Devil.

The issue covers how he met Blue Devil; why he's incredibly loyal to him, but seemingly being neglected himself; why Zatara isn't the complete dick he seemed in his earlier appearances; and how a deal with Neron may have been the worst decision he's ever made.

In 22 pages, Johns has crafted a story which makes you care about this nerdy little demonic kid. You feel sorry for him, and his hard luck story. The issue also manages to buck the decompression trend, and in many ways it felt like a Wolfman and Perez issue of The New Teen Titans, with so much crammed into the page count. A great read.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

The Bakers Meet Jingle Belle

This issue is my first exposure to Kyle Baker's The Bakers, inspired by his family, so I can't attest to how well writer Paul Dini captured the spirit of them. I can attest to, however, what a great Jingle Belle tale this is. Once again, Paul Dini has presented readers with another wacky, madcap story of Santa's rebellious daughter.

This issue features Santa draggling JB out to assist with the delivery of presents, leading to her babysitting the Baker kids to escape working, thus resulting in her learning a lesson of sorts.

Baker's art is an acquired taste. Though it's vastly different to other artists working on Jingle Belle comics, it manages to fit the tone of the comic nicely. It's a wacky Christmas special, it's irreverant, but it's a load of fun.

I read the originals:

Superman: For Tomorrow Volume 2 collects the second half of the grossly underrated story arc by Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee. The story does move slowly, but it's nonetheless an enjoyable read.
Daredevil: Father is an excellent read, as Daredevil takes on a case which he takes personally. The story has a few twists and turns, along with a fantastic resolution.

Other bits and pieces:

Birds of Prey was an excellent read, narrowly missing a spot with the week's best
Ion featured the entertaining return of DC's Tangent characters from years back
For once, New Avengers could have benefitted from more decompression, in a standalone story that could have used two issues
Darkman vs Army of Darkness was a silly, wacky, fun, over the top read

After the pace slowed down slightly with #2, I was slightly worried that Gen 13 would be losing momentum, bringing it down to the standards of some of the previous runs of the series.

By the look of the third issue, it appears that my concern was unfounded - thus far, at least. The Gen 13 kids have escaped from IO, and are on the run. And naturally, shenanigans ensue.

Add Gail Simone's gift for characterisation and humour, and you get a hell of an entertaining read. Talent Caldwell and Matt Banning's art more than suffices - while he maintains a cartoony style, he manages to capture the characters' emotions wonderfully.

Justice League of America #4

Gen 13 isn't the only series which appeared to be losing steam; Justice League of America also appeared to be following the same route. Unlike Grant Morrison's huge opening arc for JLA, writer Brad Meltzer is bringing the story along slowly, building mystery and tension, with a strong focus on characterisation. It's now abundantly clear that this is a completely different beast to it's predecessor.

The team hasn't officially "formed" yet, but the action's there. Starros are attacking the heroes, as well as villains, and the issue concludes with a nice twist.

Ed Benes and Sandra Hope's art is nothing short of astounding. If they can continue to keep getting their work out on time, it could quite possibly be one of the greatest artistic runs in recent history.

From my quote of the week along with my cover of the week being from this issue, it probably comes as no real surprise that this issue falls within the best of the week. A stark contrast from the terrible Jeph Loeb penned Batman/The Spirit, this issue is actually good - fucking good, to be precise!

While Loeb's introduction gave us hokey characters and a ridiculous plot, this issue manages to keep a light hearted tone, with humour that actually works. Furthermore, Darwyn Cooke has managed to bring this pulp, Golden Age hero into the 21st century, without sacrificing any of the inherent charm seen throughout Eisner's work.

Cooke's art is as beautiful as always, and presents the issue with a timeless feel. The comic is recommended for anyone who likes great comics.

X-23: Target X #1

Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost are an interesting pair of writers. On one hand, the original X-23 miniseries was brilliant stuff; but on the other, when integrating the character into New X-Men, it fell completely flat. Luckily, X-23: Target X is following the standard set by her original miniseries.

The first issue of this sequel follows X-23, shortly after the events of the previous miniseries. She's continuing her journey of self discovery, and is alone for the first time in her life.

Michael Choi's art is a departure from Billy Tan's, but the style suits the story perfectly. It's a serious take, and he manages to capture the essence of the characters - particularly the titular X-23 - excellently, as well as provides some awesome pieces of action. Excellent stuff.

I'll get this out of the way first. In a ridiculous display of political correctness, DC changed the title of this from Infinite Christmas to Infinite Holiday. It appears that the dreaded "C" word is still offensive, and so much so, that DC will give up the Infinite Crisis pun to not use it.

As for the comic itself, it's a mostly successful compilation of Christmas stories, briefly outlined below:

"A Hector Hammond Christmas" is a tale of Green Lantern giving the villain memories of Christmases in his past. A little heavy handed, but enjoyable.
"Christmas Spirits" is a hilarious Shadowpact story about Santa asking the Shadowpact for help from the terrorist group calling themselves the Anti-Christmas League.
"All I Want For Christmas..." is a take on Roger Stern's Metropolis Mailbag stories about Superman at Christmas; this time feauturing Supergirl.
"Gift of the Magi" is an enjoyable take on what Christmas means to the pantheon of the SHAZAM mythological gods, with some mystery and action thrown in.
"Father Christmas" sees the Flash helping a father make Christmas special for his daughter - and is far better than Bilson and DeMeo have accomplished on the title.
"Lights" is the issue's token Hanukah story; a heart-warming tale featuring Batwoman and a menorah.
"Yes, Tyrone, There Is a Santa Claus" is a stupid, silly, wacky Elseworlds take on Superman's plans to play Santa Claus for a kid, featuring some great moments with Batman.

This trade paperback collects the first twelve issues of Fallen Angel's critically acclaimed run at DC. The series was unceremoniously cancelled by DC, leading to IDW picking it up, and printing the fantastic run.

Having missed the DC issues, I finally grabbed this trade paperback, and to be perfectly honest, I found myself slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's good - but it's not quite up to the standard of the latter IDW issues.

I don't know if it comes down to Peter David having more freedom at IDW, or just teething issues early on, but it's just lacking the certain magic of the current run.

It's still more than worth reading, though.

The New Teen Titans: Terra Incognito trade paperback

From this trade paperback, it's easy to see why the Wolfman/Perez run on The New Teen Titans is considered a classic to this day. Sure, parts of it are dated, and by today's standards, the dialogue is dodgy, but the issues manage to cram in action, adventure, and characterisation, and have room left for humour.

This collection collects the early issues in the Terra saga, right from where Changeling rescues her for the first time. It also chronicles the tragic origin of Adrian Chase, leading to him donning the Vigilante costume.

A great read, which reminds me of just how good some of the classics are.

This is Paul Dini's greatest issue of Detective Comics yet. And ironically, for a series where the focus is Batman detective stories, it features a minimal amount of Batman, and no detective angle whatsoever. Instead, readers are treated to Robin and the Joker in a Christmas tale. Of sorts.

It's Christmas time in Gotham, and the Joker manages to take Robin hostage. The Joker, full of Christmas spirit, takes Robin for a joyride, where the helpless Boy Wonder is forced to watch a killing spree.

This is one of the great Joker stories. Dark, twisted and scary, but with a sense of humour that has you shaking your head that you actually laughed at that. Paul Dini proved on Batman: The Animated Series time and again that he "gets" the Joker, and he's done it again - this time without having to worry about the censorship inherent in the cartoon.

Geoff Johns has been talking up his relaunch of Justice Society of America in a big way. From my perspective, he hasn't needed to, because when he was on the title, it was amazing (much as Paul Levitz's issues sucked big time). Johns has mentioned a few times that his intention is to make this the best comic on the shelves.

And from the look of the first issue, it may actually get there. From early in the issue with the Flash, Green Lantern and Wildcat discussing who to recruit, to the returning members, characters who have floated around the DCU, to all new characters, Johns has them all down pat. The new Starman is hilarious, as is Maxine Hunkel, who is yet to decide on a codename.

Dale Eaglesham's art is great, and suits the mood and tone beautifully, while successfully working with the large number of characters. This title has already eclipsed it's excellent sister book, Justice League of America. A great read.

It's all about Dr Sivana, baby (and not so much Art Thibert, who inked two of the best books of the week). Not only does he provide the issue with a healthy dose of humour, he makes some revelations harkening back to the very beginning of the series. While the book is generally an excellent read, Sivana provides the issue with an extra dose of fun that elevates it to the best it has been in a long while.

Judd Winick knows how to handle his characters. Sivana, along with the Outsiders, are all so clearly defined, that the final issue of the current arc consisting of mainly dialogue, is a brilliant read.

The art does it's job nicely, but the strength of the issue really lies with Winick's writing. An excellent read.

I'm sorry to say that up until now, I wasn't familiar with Kaare Andrews' work. That said, after this issue, I will be keeping my eye out for any other work by him. He manages to write, draw and colour the entire issue, all to beautiful effect.

This issue is the first of the "new" Marvel Knights imprint, refocused to tell miniseries that sit outside of mainstream Marvel continuity. It tells the story of an elderly Peter Parker in a dystopian future, where New York is for all intents and purposes, a police state.

Thematically, this is similar to V For Vendetta, however in many ways, it looks set to be Spider-Man's equivalent of The Dark Knight Returns, bringing Spidey out of retirement to right wrongs. The script has gravitas, and the art is amazing. I'm not generally a fan of photorealistic backgrounds in comics, but Andrews has integrated these seamlessly, heightening the tone shown in the art. Highly recommended.

Runaways Volume 2 Hardcover collects the first twelve issues of the second Runaways series, along with the Free Comic Book Day X-Men/Runaways special. For the most part, it's all a great read, though the Free Comic Book Day issue really sells the comic short. That aside, it's well worth it.

While I'm not a fan of all of Peter David's work, I am a huge fan of artist George Perez. And I've enjoyed Sachs' and Violens' appearances in Fallen Angel.

This trade paperback collects the original miniseries from 1993, where writer Peter David uses these characters to examine the differences between sex and violence, which are so often grouped together, while being nothing alike.

That said, the story itself isn't high art. It's exploitative. It features a softcore "adult" model (Sachs) and photographer (Violens) in an adventure taking them through the seedy world of snuff movies, and beyond. It's a fun read, albeit nothing groundbreaking. Just fun.

Cancellation:

Desolation Jones got the axe this week. I'm a huge fan of Warren Ellis, and loved the first arc, but Danijel Zezelj's art on this arc is shocking. I really can't stomach it, and it's virtually impossible to distinguish the characters from one another.

Beyond! wrapped up nicely, and builds towards something bid for D-list hero Gravity

Newuniversal was a great reintroduction to the "New Universe", and promises to be a great series

Angel: Auld Lang Syne plays off the first issue nicely

Spidey in black

The title of this post says it all, really. It's a teaser poster for Spider-Man 3, featuring Spidey in his black costume.

I'm not sure what to make of the movie - I loved the first two, but everything I've seen of the third has failed to get me excited thus far.

But that sure is a purdy picture. Far nicer than the other teasers they've released.

Where's Krypton?

On Wednesday, I picked up the 13 disc Superman box set, including the four movies from the 70's and 80's, and Superman Returns. I'll get into more detail about the set itself when I've had a chance to scour all thirteen discs, but I did get the chance to watch Returns and the deleted scenes.

The movie itself is fantastic. I enjoyed it even more than when I saw the film at the movies. Of the deleted scenes included on the DVD, however, there was nothing that leaped out at me as should have been included in the movie.

That said, I was disappointed to see that the "return to Krypton" segment that was originally going to be included early in the movie wasn't included.

I suspect we'll be seeing an Extended Cut at some point, allowing for "never before seen footage". Still, I was looking forward to seeing this scene, so it kinda pissed me off.
